Tech Trek- Post

I was born in 1967 in a developing 3rd world country.  When I went to school back in the 70’ (elementary) and 80’s (high school) there was no technology. I didn’t see or touch a computer until 1988, here in the US. It happened when I attended College and we had to learn a program called – DOS-; now known as Excel.

At College I also remember learning to type in an electronic typewriter, and thinking to myself how awesome it was!... I was seeing a typewriter in my country, but looked like this one…

Blackboards were made of charcoal, and chalk was used to write on them, some schools in the rural areas back home still use this type of tools for teaching. Even when my son went to school, I don’t recall seeing, smart boards at school or any of the technology for learning I had seeing on my practices at school now a days.

As I grew older, and as UCF student, I had learned some of this new technological tools; I do have to admit though that there is still so much for me to learn yet. Just last semester I understood what a blog was, and I can’t say I mastered the concept to its maximum yet.

There is a part of me that agree that technology brings veracity now days for teaching and learning; still, it scares me because of my lack of knowledge. I feel as I am being confronted with the reality that kids are more knowledge than me, therefore they are expecting this type of learning, I better learned fast or I won’t be a good teacher….

The other side of me, miss the old days, with dictionaries to look for words, scrap papers or items around the house to do a science or social studies project; going to the library and/or reading encyclopedias to do a research work instead of looking it up, or to better say it…“Google”  in internet.

I now the new generation need these tools for learning, and that at the end of the day; they are great resources that make things much easier for students and for the teachers, providing them advancement in life as well as preparing them for the future.

So, my goal as a future teacher is to keep on learning; so that I can confidently teach and show my students how to best develop their way of living and learning in this new cybernetic era.

  4. Seidy,
I completely understand where you are coming from with having to learn about all this new technology. I grew up with computers but I still feel like I have a lot to learn. Also a lot of times your own students can teach you; sometimes I ask my students how to use things or what's "new" for them. Kids love to teach their teacher!
